Mrs Humaira Awais Shahid is an active parliamentarian, who became a leading voice on the floor of the Punjab Assembly on the issues of human rights. She tabled the resolutions on customary practice of Vinni (25 February 2003) and Acid Crimes (8 August 2003) which were unanimously passed by the Punjab Assembly. She has a distinction of successfully legislating the bill “The Prohibition of Private Money Lending Act 2007 (VI of 2007)”. The bill was moved in August 2003 and was passed in June 2007; after the single-handed effort of almost four years. Humaira Awais Shahid was the member of Standing Committee on Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education, and special House Committees on “Violence against Women” and “Private Sector Education Reform”. brings with her the background in journalism and human rights activism. She did her M.Phil. in English in 1999 and joined the Khabrain Group of Newspapers to pioneer Khabrain Helpline to investigate, report and redress the grievances of the under privileged, who approached for justice and legal help.
